An IoT smart inductive proximity sensor is a non-contact electronic proximity sensor. It is used for positioning and detection of metal objects. The sensing range of an inductive switch is dependent on the type of metal being detected. Ferrous metals, such as iron and steel, allow for a longer sensing range, while nonferrous metals, such as aluminum and copper, may reduce the sensing range by up to 60 percent. Inductive proximity sensors are best for detecting ferrous metals, especially steel thicker than 1 mm. These sensors put out a magnetic field that is disturbed by the metal, which alerts the sensor to the metalÕs presence. Since the presence of any metal, including metal the sensor is embedded in, will affect the sensor, there are shielded inductive sensors which introduce metal to the field in a predictable way. This allows the sensor to detect irregularities in the field when new pieces of metal pass by it, although it also limits the sensorÕs range. Unshielded sensors have a longer range but are unable to be mounted on or near ferrous metal.
